What is Damascene craftsmanship?+
Damascene craftsmanship is the traditional woodworking art of Damascus, Syria — known for hand carving, geometric marquetry and mother-of-pearl inlay. Artisans assemble hundreds of small pieces of wood and pearl into stars, lattices and floral patterns, entirely by hand.
What makes mother-of-pearl inlay distinctive?+
Mother-of-pearl is cut from natural shell, so every piece shimmers differently as it catches the light. Set into dark walnut by hand, it gives each object a depth and luminosity that printed or painted decoration cannot reproduce.
